There are quite a lot of things that separate these days movies from the ones back then. Sound definitely was one of the biggest moments in cinematic history and one of the major improvements that we see in nowadays cinema.
It all started when great inventor Thomas Edison, affected by his deaf and not being able to hear again, wanted to create something that could keep the sound for a long time. His idea has come to reality. In 1877 Thomas Edison became the inventor of the machine which could capture the sound and play it back – what we call a phonograph.
With the invention of phonograph, here begins a new chapter in the history of cinema. Finally, cinema is not only connection of moving images, but we also can have a sound expression next to it. First of all, sound-on-disk appeared. But it was far away from perfection. Easy to lose sync, no amplification and limited recording time was its major problems. Later, sound-on-film process has appeared, which was more flexible to work with and let record any sound track, whether digital or not.
Even though this marriage between phonograph and photography wasn’t that smooth at the beginning, years of improving have showed some great results. Now, a good quality of the sound isn’t something that surprise us in this modern times but at the same time it is something we are pleasantly surprised of.
Overall, sound in a film is one a really powerful tool for storytelling and giving people an impact. It is one of the keys to deeper immersion – and that is what we like about cinema.
