New media is continuously evolving. Together with artificial intelligence (AI) that is rapidly evolving, new ways of art creation are appearing. At the same time as we can entertain ourselves through new media on the internet, music streaming, videos etc. there are threats against our privacy. With the evolving AI we do not have the private life as we used to have, and the amount of information about ourselves is all over the internet, just from using different kinds of online media.

Media artist Stanza created an art piece called The Nemesis Machine that could be seen in Finland 2021. Stanza created a small city from microchips, hard drives and cables. These make sounds that can be seen as citynoise that also gather information about the humans in the city. It explores the data that runs through a city and how we navigate in the city. The fascinating part is that this art piece actually gather information about the visitors and surroundings of the art piece. The “city” changes according to information from the outside, such as weather but also reacts to the visitors. If a visitors enter after drinking alcohol the sensors in the art can observe this and change accordingly to that.

The meaning is to react to the control society that is continuously evolving, and in what way we should take it. The art piece can be seen as both utopian and dystopian. Art pieces such as this could be seen as interactive, but as in reality with the control society, it seems like it just reacts to us and not according to us. But at least probably everybody gets a good thought about how we continuously give information about ourselves, if we want it or not.
